Cosplay is a portmanteau of “costume” and “roleplay.” It denotes the practice of dressing up in the costume of fictional characters, most often comic book superheroes like Superman and Spiderman, science fiction movies like Star Wars, or any fantasy offering with a large cult following such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Twilight. ¬ Public Cosplay is most often seen at comic book conventions and large public events around a fantasy release, such as the opening of comic book movie or the release of the latest Harry Potter novel. Fans can invest a great deal of time and effort (and money) into creation of their costumes, and Cosplayers are always a colorful feature when mainstream media covers the large events like Comic-Con. The term cosplay can also denote the practice of dressing up privately in intimate settings to add a fantasy element to sexual encounters.
