cost

Cost is generally thought of as the price of something, although it can also refer to the amount of time and effort allocated to any given task. A war that is fought may also be measured in part by the "cost in human lives" that are lost. In this sense, it is a toll that is taken in regards to life and death.

Most things in life are measured by means of cost in time, money, or both. Very few things are truly free. Most things have an expense attached in one form or another. Something can cost a lot and be expensive, like a mansion, or cost much less and be cheap, like a gumball (or relatively cheap, like cheap car insurance).

When you live on a budget, it's a lot more easy to keep your costs in check, and you are much less likely to have a money drain or face insurmountable debt and bankruptcy.
