costumes

Costumes are any assortment of apparel to present another persona or to assume the identity of another. Costumes can be worn as part of an entertainment, to aid the illusion of an actor playing a role on stage or in a movie, or it may be an act of personal expression, as at Halloween, costume parties, or costumed roleplay (Cosplay). The wearing of a costume may include hiding the wearer’s own identity, such as when Don Diego de la Vega putting on a mask to become Zorro, but it is not the principle goal of the masquerade. The function of a costume is to assume another identity, to appear before the world in that persona of either a specific, known fictional or historic character (a real person dressing as Batman for Halloween, Christian Bale dressing as Batman in The Dark Knight) or a created iconic persona (such as Bruce Wayne dressing as Batman who did not exist in his fictional world until Wayne himself invented him).
