A cot is a British word meaning a walled bed for sleeping babies and toddlers. It stops the child from falling out, offering a safe sleeping solution where the cot meets strict safety standards. Americans use the word "crib." This item of furniture is seen as an essential by many parents who do not wish to co-sleep or would like to use a blend of both sleeping methods. Some parents like to start off with a bassinet in the baby's first four to six months, which is much smaller than a cot and offers a cocooning sense of security to the baby.
Now more than ever, there are an increasing variety of cots, from the traditional rectangular cot with and without a dropside, to inventive designs such as the oval Stokke Sleepi and Ubabub Pod. Cots can be made of wood and metal and creative companies are now using perspex as a design element.
Many cots now convert to a toddler bed with the use of a conversion kit, which uses the same cot-sized mattress, yet opens the cot up into a bed. This can provide a more secure transition for a child who may feel anxious about a change of bed.
Baby experts recommend that parents take great care when selecting a cot; new cots always meet the current safety standards, however second-hand cots should be checked carefully for signs of wear and that they meet current safety standards.
