cpu

Tag details

CPU is an abbreviation for Central Processing Unit, which refers to the central processing system of a computer. Also called a processing unit, or even just a processor, this is the component within your desktop or laptop where the most important functions and calculations occur.

You could actually call the CPU the heartbeat which makes everything else tick, when it comes to all the many things our personal computers do these days. Without the CPU, you wouldn't be able to download files, save information to directories, or even surf the internet. CPU's store data, process information, and perform a multitude of tasks mostly unnoticed by the average computer user.

In most home computers and PC work stations, the CPU comes inside a small chip called a microprocessor. Conversely, larger machines, such as those used in government or by businesses may require one or more circuit boards to store the CPU. You can find a wide variety of CPUs and learn more information about them at just about any place where you might buy computer hardware.

You'll find bloggers speaking about CPUs at sites like ComputerPowerUser and ProgrammersHeaven.
