Craigslist made its debut on the Internet in 1995 as a mailing list announcing local events in the Bay Area which were targeted to people in the blossoming technology industry in Silicon Valley. Little did founder Craig Newmark know how big the idea would eventually become.

In just over a decade, Craigslist, a non-profit organization, has expanded into one of the largest conglomerates of online communities in the world. Now, users in dozens of locations, both domestic and international, can post jobs, look for love, and give away just about anything in their area using their localized Craigslist site.

Of course, Craigslist hasn't been devoid of any controversy. Less than four years after eBay bought a 25% stake in the company, the auction site sued Craigslist for diluting their investment. Craigslist has also had its share of unscrupulous people join its user ranks, including those involved in crimes such as robbery and prostitution, but the site continues to fight these the best they can through the help of their own employees and the at-large community. By in large, they've done a good job, further supporting the success of Craigslist.
