culture
The word "culture" is frequently used for a nations or groups tastes and preferences in art, cuisine, music, books, fashion, and manners.
Terms like popular culture or mass culture often refer to mainstream music, movies, activities, and so forth. High culture usually refers to the fine arts. Sometimes the term "mid-brow" is used to designate a book or movie that is intellectually driven yet maintains popular accessibility. "High brow" would be high culture, while "low brow" would be low culture.
Some writers say that popular culture needs defending from the high-culture crowd.
The blogosphere has its cultural commentators, while online magazines like Slate and Salon also critique several aspects of culture.
