Curly hairstyles can be categorized into two main sections to start and those are natural curly and hand curled. Some women have naturally curly hair and style their hair normally. Women without natural curls who want curly hairstyles need to have curls infused into their tresses using one of several methods. These methods include using curling irons, curl setters or hot rollers, flat irons, and getting a perm. All these techniques are designed to produce varying intensities and sizes of curls and will vary depending on hair type.

Curly hairstyles can also be combined with other types of cuts as well. Layering and bundling in updos go well with curls. The types of curls are integral to how the hairstyle appears. Curly hairstyles can have loose, large curls created by larger barrel curling irons, smaller ones created with curl hot rollers, spiraling curls, wavy curls, and the list goes on and on. These different types of curls are what create the unique looks for curly hairstyles.
