data backup

Data backup refers to the process of creating copies of data. Backups are usually part of a disaster recovery strategy to be able to access and restore data in case of data corruption.

There are different ways to create data backups. Data backups can be stored online, in a computer network and even on the same computer system (which is not advised). All backups are handled by so called backup software.

The right backup solution can make or break a recovery strategy. It is for instance important to avoid storing the backups on the same computer as it would not be possible to restore the data if the computer was destroyed or stolen.

Free and commercial backup software is available for all popular operating systems.
