data protection
Data is so important that it can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more. It all really depends on the data. Although what is important to one company or person may not be important to another company or person, it's all very critical to the end user and should be as secure as possible. Data needs to be protected against those who shouldn't be using it (hackers and competitors) just as we need to protect it from ourselves (accidental deletion and ruination).
Data protection can come in the form of online backup or even remote backup. A good disk backup appliance features what is called "deduplication", which just means that storage needs are reduced by eliminating redundant data.
It isn't necessary to know all the ins and outs about how the technology works (unless you are the engineer), but with data protection it sure is nice to know that your data is much less likely to be compromised in any way. Bloggers speaking about data protection can be found at sites like globaldatavault and itknowledgeexchange.
