Meritocracy Through Maly’s Model
http://bnww.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 05/ 14/ meritocracy-through-malys-model/While we are talking about meritocracy, I thought I’d recommend an old favorite. The author, Matthew Maly, tries to explain anti-Americanism in much of the world by critiquing the assumption of many Americans that everyone wants a “win-win society” – much the same thing as a meritocracy.

“Neural Buddhism” as religion’s future
http://www.worldontheweb.com/ 2008/ 05/ 14/ neural-buddhism-as-religions-future/…In his column yesterday, The New York Times’s David Brooks, lately on a neuroanthropological kick, tackles the religious implications of modern neuroscience, saying its research portends disaster for orthodox believers—Christians, Jews, Muslims—although perhaps accommodating a generalized belief in some non-God supreme being.

The Neural Buddhists -- David Brooks and Tom Wolfe
http://phaedrus72.vox.com/ library/ post/ the-neural-buddhists----david-brooks-a…The Neural Buddhists I read this piece in the NY Times op/ed section, by David Brooks. Very interesting stuff and it got me thinking quite a bit. In the piece, he references a 1996 essay by the novelist Tom Wolfe, entitled, Sorry, But Your Soul Just Died. Both of these pieces are brilliant.

Keeping the/a Faith
http://www.monumentality.net/ ?p=33Future cultural divides, writes David Brooks, will not be along religious lines, but between the theistic and the atheistic: In unexpected ways, science and mysticism are joining hands and reinforcing each other. That’s bound to lead to new movements that emphasize self-transcendence but put little stock in divine law or revelation.

“Neural Buddhists” and their books
http://mymindonbooks.com/ ?p=561“Neural Buddhists” and their books May 13, 2008 I was thinking of linking to books by the authors mentioned by David Brooks in his New York Times column “The Neural Buddhists,” but then I found out that Neuroanthropology has already done it —in “David Brooks Bonus.”

David Brooks on neural Buddhists
http://blog.beliefnet.com/ crunchycon/ 2008/ 05/ david-brooks-on-neural-buddhis.…David Brooks on neural Buddhists I will confess to you all that I have no idea what David Brooks means by saying that science is going to turn us into "neural Buddhists." As distinct from, I dunno, gonadal Episcopalians? Please help me figure this out.

More Worldviews… to Choose From
http://wildresiliencyblog.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 05/ 13/ more-worldviews-to-choose…More Worldviews… to Choose From May 13, 2008 by Larry Glover Now, there are more worldviews to choose from than there are Barbie Dolls. I’ve been writing on them (worldviews) of late just because I’m so fascinated about how it is that each of us come into our own version.

Is there a compromise between religion and science that we have ignored? Shoud the sacred be reinvented?

The Neural Buddhists
http://www.linkbanana.com/ 2008/ 05/ 13/ the-neural-buddhists/The Neural Buddhists I’m sure this isn’t the best David Brooks column in recent weeks, but its another good and interesting one. His contention: the Bible — all dogmatism — is going to have a hard time in the next century. In unexpected ways, science and mysticism are joining hands and reinforcing each other.

The Method: Marcus Brooks
http://methodatelier.com/ 2008/ 05/ 13/ the-method-marcus-brooks/I recently met a young designer who makes custom-designed clothes and he’s pretty damn good at it. I want you to meet 17 year old, Marcus Brooks. What stood out about this guy is that he has a great sense of style and a great deal of creativity at an early age. He has a plan and knows where he wants to go.
