DC Comics is a comic book publisher founded in 1934 as National Allied Publications. DC and its rival Marvel are the “Big Two” and comprise the vast majority of the comic book industry. DC Comics is best known for the superheroes of its Golden Age: Superman who premiered in Action Comics #1 in 1938 and Batman who first appeared in Detective Comics #27, and it is the Detective Comics title from which “DC” gets its name. DC Comics was acquired by Time Warner in 1969. In a 2009 restructuring, it was removed from the publishing division and placed under the Warner Bros. movie studios as DC Entertainment. New creative director Geoff Johns and Co-Publisher Jim Lee were installed, and in August 2011, all DC Characters were “rebooted” and all comic titles relaunched under the label “The New 52.” This new DCU is aimed at a larger, mainstream audience who know the characters from movies and television and those fans of the characters who stopped reading comics over the past decade. The New 52 is also restructuring to take advantage of 21st century technology such as digital distribution.
