Death refers to the termination of all biological processes that sustain life within an organism. All living things that survive various natural hazards will eventual perish from senescence, or the biological process of aging. Changes associated with aging include a declining ability of the organism to respond to stress and adapt to their environment, increased homeostatic imbalance, weakened bodily functions, as well as an elevated risk of age-associated illnesses.

Old age is not typically recognized as a cause of death, especially in humans, since there is always some health related immediate cause, such as cancer or cardiovascular disease. However, the incidence of age-related illnesses increases dramatically as an individual ages. Signs of death in humans and animals include cardiac arrest; cessation of breathing; paleness (palor mortis), which settles in within 15 to 120 minutes after death; postmortem lividity (livor mortis), or the settling of the blood in the lower part of the body; a steady decrease in body temperature (algor mortis); stiffness of the limbs (rigor mortis); and eventually decomposition.
