debate

It could be argued (or debated!) that lively debate has made the world what it is today. The general feeling that no topic is too sacred or too secret to be discussed in the harsh court of public opinion is an idea that has made democracies great and nations strong since the very beginning.

The Greeks and Romans first introduced the concept that all ideas should be debated in an environment of open and fair exchange. They contested that the very best ideas would, ultimately, rise to top in this type of environment.


Debate is the formal art of argument, complete with logic, rhetoric, and fiery accusations. However, how one wins a debate will always be a mystery. Some use logic and facts, while others use emotion and rhetoric. Still others use a framework or context to persuade the audience (jury, judge, group of people) that their viewpoint is correct.

You can debate everything from the merits of global warming to why the weather lady should start wearing a hat. You can debate around the water cooler at work or via video conference. Debate is and always will be a way of life.
