debian
Debian is a computer operating system that uses the Linux kernel and GNU OS tools. It is a highly popular operating system that can be used as a desktop computer system or server operating system.
Many Linux distributions are based on Debian including Ubuntu, Xandros or Damn Small Linux
The standard installation of Debian uses the GNOME desktop environment which includes popular software programs such as Firefox, OpenOffice and tools for many other purposes like playing music or video and burning data to disks.
Different packages are offered, for instance a bare bones versions where the system administrator has to install the software manually after installation.
A prominent and popular feature of Debian is the APT package management system which allows Debian users to easily upgrade between releases.
