deforestation
Deforestation is the removal of trees from a forest and can happen in two ways. First, when lightning strikes a tinder dry forest causing a forest fire, which is a natural process and happens all over the world. Second, when humankind burns or logs forests for trees to be used for furniture, fuel, and construction or to clear land for farming.
Brazil and Indonesia are classic examples of countries that have been deforested at alarming rates, as the demand for wood has driven the price of timber up, making it attractive to illegally log large sections of forest. Also demand for beef has increased exponentially and so cattle farms have sprung up across Brazil, with forests being cleared to make way for grazing cattle.
Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is being employed to give forests a value. Other initiatives being dicussed on blogs include commercial reforestation and timber investment.
