Dermatology is the branch of medicine dealing with the skin and its diseases, a unique specialty with both medical and surgical aspects. A Dermatologist treats diseases and cancers of the skin, scalp, hair, and nails.

Dermatology in general is practiced by many different physicians since family and general practice physicians are typically the first doctors to see and treat a condition.

Board certified Dermatologists have to undergo additional years of training that consists of an initial medical or surgical intern year followed by a three year dermatology residency. Following this training, one or two year post-residency fellowships are available in immunodermatology, phototherapy, Mohs micrographic surgery, laser treatments, cosmetic surgery or dermatopathology. Dermatology residencies in the United States have been the most competitive in terms of admissions due.

Some medical blogs have been hightly critical of the practice of restricting dermatology residencies while skin cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the US and many Dermatologists are switching to cosmetic treatments.

Dermatology blogs generally fall into four categories: skin cancer, acne, cosmetic dermatology, everything else.
