desktop

Desktop refers to the surface of a desk. It is also used by computer users to describe the "surface" of their operating system once it has loaded completely. It is then usually referred to as Windows desktop or Linux desktop depending on the operating system used.

Files and links can be placed on the desktop represented by icons that users can click on to launch the files or follow the links.

Some icons are placed by the operating system on the desktop. This for instance includes the my computer icon or recycle bin in the Windows operating system.

Most desktops display a taskbar or dock on the screen to provide their users with quick access to programs and other features. They also offer personalization in form of wallpapers.
