dictionary
The dictionary is an alphabetical listing of words, in any given language or cross-language, which provides definitions, proper pronunciation, correct spelling, and derivations as well as any restrictive labels attached to a word. A good dictionary is an invaluable tool for anyone who uses the written word and would like to do so more effectively and correctly.
Robert Cawdrey's "Table Alphabetical," first printed in 1604, is generally regarded to be the first fully developed representative of the monolingual dictionary in English. One of the earliest known dictionaries was written in Latin and compiled during the reign of Augustus. The Chinese had a dictionary in the third century B.C. In 1806, Noah Webster compiled his dictionary of the English language, America's first dictionary. The British Philological Society to begin compiling a comprehensive dictionary, which would later become the Oxford English Dictionary.
Dictionaries are found in book form, online for free or paid, and as software programs for computers, and PDAs.
