diet pill

A diet pill, or anti-obesity medication, is part of a class of drugs that are meant to help control or reduce weight in severely overweight individuals. Diet pills traditionally function by altering several processes in the human body, which may include digestion, nutrient absorption, metabolic rates, and appetite. In spite of these possible effects, weight loss medication alone is seldom effective as a means of controlling weight, especially if it is not combined with regular exercise and an adequate diet.

Moreover, most diet pills are not recommended for long term use and many more are not yet approved by the FDA. In fact, the only weight loss drug currently approved for long term use is orlisat (commercial sold under the brand name Xenical). This substance works by blocking the absorption of fat from dietary sources, and effectively reducing caloric intake.

However, the human body does not store fat only from fatty acids, but also converts excess carbohydrates into fat, via the liver. Consequently, while the efficiency of orlisat is definite, it is also limited, and individuals under treatment with orlisat tend to only lose 2 or 3 more kilograms than other people who only opt for diet and exercise. This has led physicians to recommend the use of Orlisat in combination with a calorie restrictive diet and an increased amount of physical activity.

Due to their numerous side effects (most concerning gastrointestinal problems), weight loss drugs are usually prescribed only to obese individuals. People who wish to drop a few extra pounds or simply don't know how to lose belly fat should follow a dietician's diet plan, coupled with physical exercise, before resorting to diet pills.

Some of the side effects of diet pills include an increased risk of high blood pressure, agitation, insomnia, flatulence (because of the undigested fats that end up in the large intestine), stomach pain, oily stools and more.

Due to the great difficulty that scientists have encountered when trying to understand the neural basis of increased appetite, and means to counter it, a truly efficient weight-control drug has yet to be developed. Aside from the acclaimed orlisat, other anti-obesity drugs include sibutramine, rimonabant, metformin, exenatide, pramlintide, and lorcaserin.
