A diet plan is a carefully crafted, extensive menu that incorporates all daily meals, either covering a determined period of time, or indefinitely, and usually with the purpose of achieving or maintaining a certain health standard. Most people use diet plans as solutions to weight problems and other health-related issues, and individuals suffering from various diseases (such as diabetes or celiac disease) typically need to resort to a special diet plan that can assist disease management.

While the majority of people living in Western countries do not pay much attention to what they eat, many individuals who wish to pursue a healthier lifestyle will often begin by abiding to a specific diet plan, until they become more familiar with what they can and cannot eat. For example, people who wish to transition to a raw lifestyle will often undergo a detoxification routine based on a rather restrictive diet plan. However, as they gradually become accustomed with raw nutrition, they will no longer need a diet plan to guide their culinary choices.

Diet plans are generally based on a thorough analysis of the nutritional requirements of either the average man, or specific individuals. Diet plans should therefore seek to provide all the necessary nutrients the dieter needs, while eliminating certain substances that may be harmful or simply useless.

People who are not particularly knowledgeable on the subject of human nutrition will often resort to diet plans to lose excess weight and apply discipline to their eating habits. For this reason, numerous nutritionists and medical experts have elaborated plenty of different diet plans that target excess weight, while also being easy to follow and consisting of savory meals. Other diet plans can help individuals achieve particular goals, such as building a lot of muscle mass, or being very slim (as is the case with "calorie restriction" diets such as the Okinawa diet).

Successful diet plans are usually defined by a certain degree of rigor, although this should not transpire to the dieters, who shouldn't feel that they are pressured into consuming only a narrow range of foods.
