Dillard's was established in 1938 in the town of Nashville, Arkansas by businessman William Dillard, who came to open up the store after working for nine months at Sears Roebuck & Company.

Dillard's became incorporated in 1964, went public under the ticker symbol "DDS" in 1969, and by 1998 had acquired several smaller stores, including Ivey's, Maison Blanche, and Mercantile Stores. Unfortunately, that began the beginning of a financial slide for Dillard's. The department store chain started selling some of its assets to try to maintain a positive financial ledger.

As of 2007, Dillard's still operated over 300 stores in more than two dozen states, employing over 50,000 people. Dillard's maintains its home operations in Little Rock, Arkansas.
