disability

Tag details

In years past, an individual with a disability in the United States and in most western nations faced poor job prospects, financial hardship, problems with transportation and even building access.  Thanks to efforts on the part of disability rights advocates, disabled individuals have more opportunities and legal rights than their forbearers could have ever imagined.

In the United States, Social Security disability provides individuals who are unable to work with income benefits and medical care. Nations around the world have similar programs to support those affected by a disability.

While a physical or mental health disability will continue to create challenges for affected individuals, legal barriers to employment, housing and opportunity have been greatly reduced.
