Mentioning the word “disaster” conjures up images such as 2005's Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 tsunami devastation in the Indian Ocean, the September 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, and the Northridge earthquake in Southern California in 1994. Disaster preparedness is the act of setting all affairs in order beforehand to be ready for any of these types of natural or human-caused catastrophes.

One of the affairs that is necessary to put in order before a major and unexpected life-altering event is having a survival plan. In homes, families can decide upon escape routes and meeting places if and when it becomes mandatory to evacuate due to a fire, flood, earthquake, or some other challenge to their survival.

Areas of the country that are prone to severe weather conditions such as tornadoes, hurricanes, microbursts, and hail storms have a unique prescribed set of recommendations for preparedness.

Bloggers speak of the need for disaster preparedness in each possible disaster scenario by having food storage, water storage, and a 72 hour kit, which contains essentials for emergencies such as blankets, matches, medicine, a utility knife, and a first aid kit.
