Distance running is a type of running that is quickly gaining popularity as the general populace focuses more and more on health and exercise. This type of running doesn't usually take place on a running track, but rather on roads, canyons, and grass. It also requires a runner to balance his or her energy and conserve strength. Distance running by its very nature is energy-consuming, requiring mental determination and physical conditioning to be able to compete well because stamina and endurance are the biggest factors and are much more important than speed.
The two main distance races are the 5,000 meter and the 10,000 meter races. But distance running can include everything from running around your neighborhood every day to stay in shape to marathons to 5K and 10K races. Road races and cross country races are also becoming more and more popular. Some distance running is multi-day and can last up to a week.
