Microsoft has introduced Office Open XML file formats in Microsoft Office 2007. They are a set of file formats that represent electronic office documents. It defines a set of XML markup vocabularies for Office documents and materials including word processing documents, presentations or spreadsheets.

The new file formats are distinguishable by an x that is added to their file extension. Microsoft Word documents for instance are saved as docx files by default in Microsoft Office 2007 as opposed to doc which has been the standard file extension in earlier Office versions.

The docx file extension has caused some confusion by users who could not use previous Microsoft Office applications or other word processing tools to open the format properly.

Microsoft and other developers have since increased support for the docx format so that all major word processing suites support the format either natively or through plug-ins.
