Dog training is a lot like potty training a child; there is going to be some good days and bad, some stops and starts. Some defeats and some victories. You need to establish patterns that a dog can understand and follow. That means persistence and consistency. The worst thing that you can do is to make the dog think it's wrong to do something on one occasion and then to let the bad behavior slip by scot-free another time. There have got to be some ground rules.

Here's some free dog training advice: you have to remember that dogs and dolphins (and humans and the rest of the animal kingdom for that matter) need and crave attention and positive reinforcement. Instead of "catching" your dog doing something wrong all the time, notice wanted and desirable behaviors. Give your dog a "Scooby snack" when he or she pleases you. This really is the best way to get a dog to develop good manners and acceptable behavior. It doesn't always have to be food, though (kind and playful interaction work well, too). It's somewhat like the Pavlov effect; but here if the dog does A he gets B in return.
