Dogging is an informal term that can refer to the act of following someone's activity closely.

In Scotland, the term dogging defines the act of deliberately missing school. Similarly, when applied to labor, it can refer to a worker's intentional restriction of productivity.

Dogging
is also a British English slang term that designates the act of having sex in a public space or observing others that are doing it. The term is thought to have originated sometime in the early 1970s, when people would walk their dogs in remote areas and stumble onto couples engaging in sexual activities out in the open, while others believe that the idea of "walking the dog" was used by some couples merely as a pretext for their outdoor meetings. Nowadays, most couples or groups arrange to meet over the Internet, by way of online communities dedicated to these kinds of activities.

Other terms describing similar sex acts are voyeurism and exhibitionism. In the UK, the legal status of dogging is somewhat ambiguous, however, couples who are apprehended may be prosecuted under the laws that regulate indecent exposure and lewd public behavior. In 2003, the BBC covered a story concerning an increase in this activity, which was dubbed "the dogging craze". The media stressed on the importance of the Internet and text messaging in organizing meetings of this nature. At the time, dogging was mostly understood as the act of spying on couples who engage in sexual activities in their cars or other public places.

Over the last few years, this trend has spread to other countries, including the United States, Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, and Brazil, to name but a few. Dogging has also become much more organized, and is now sometimes associated with swingers' clubs, and other groups of individuals who are known for their unconventional lifestyles. Police officers in the English city of Kent routinely monitor websites that promote such activities, to find out about the various dogging locations and events. While they cannot control the content of these websites, they can use their information to intervene in those meetings, and enforce the law as necessary.

Dogging
has seen considerable exposure in television as well, especially during recent years. As it has been mentioned in several films and television series, dogging is gradually becoming more and more accepted as an unconventional sexual practice and lifestyle, yet with a growing popularity in western countries.
