Tag details

Dogpile is a metasearch site, combining multiple search engines to look up a particular keyword or topic. It employs such search engines as Google, Yahoo, Ask.com, and LookSmart to present a wide variety of results to the computer user.

In addition to its searching capabilities, Dogpile became known for its mascot, Arfie the dog. Developed in 1996 by Aaron Flin, Dogpile was eventually sold to Go2net, which was subsequently acquired by Infospace. The search engine endured criticism for listing ads among other results, not clearly differentiating between the two. To combat the problem, Dogpile announced improvements to the site that would clearly distinguish between ads and other content, and would include tabs for searching specific content such as videos, images, and audio.

The search engine has also branched into philanthropy; one such project involved donating revenue generated from users to various pet rescue programs.
