A domain can refer to an administrative division, namely a non-sovereign land which has come under the authority of a foreign government.

In biology, domain refers to the highest taxonomic rank of organisms and it includes all biological kingdoms.


Domain also lends itself to a series of meanings in information technology. An administrative domain is a service provider that holds a security repository which enables an easy authentication and authorization of clients, based on credentials.

An application domain describes the kinds of purposes for which a software program can be used, while domain names are network names under which network devices are organized (such as com, net and org).


Domain names define the realms of administrative authorities over the internet. They are organized in a hierarchy, where the top level domains are the three com, net and org, but also country code domain names. Second and third level domain names can usually be reserved by end users who may want to connect local area networks to the Internet or manage websites.

In computer networking, a broadcast domain is a group of special addresses that receive network announcements. A collision domain is a network segment that functions as a shared medium where data packets can collide with each other.

In mathematics, domain is a concept used in the abstract algebra area known as ring theory, and it defines an algebraic structure that has no left or right zero divisors. In mathematical analysis, a domain is defined as any connected open subset of a finite-dimensional vector space.


Domain is also used in data management to refer to the entire set of unique values that a data element may contain. This concept relies on the notion of domain as an area over which control is exercised, as well as the mathematical idea of sets of values for which a mathematical function can be defined.

The phrase public domain refers to bodies of knowledge or works of art whose intellectual property rights have either expired or have been forfeited, so that the work becomes freely accessible to the public. Examples of public domain include the works of long-deceased authors (such as Shakespeare and Beethoven), but also Newtonian physics and the patents on powered flight.
