domain names

Tag details

Domain names are unique strings of alphanumeric characters, that when entered into a web browser, generally display a web site or web page.

You must register a domain name in order to be the respective "owner" of it. However, registering a domain name does not automatically activate a web site. The domain must be registered with an ICANN-accredited registrar, such as GoDaddy, and assigned a numeric address, called an IP address, before visitors can access a web page using the associated domain names.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) governs coordination of the links between IP addresses and domain names across the Internet.
