Domains are territories that come under the authority of a foreign government, such as American Samoa, Guam and Puerto Rico, which are administered by the United States, while also retaining some degree of local autonomy.


Domains are also used in biology to refer to taxonomical subdivisions that incorporate kingdoms. For example, in the two-empire biological system, the two domains are Prokaryota and Eukaryota, based on whether or not the organisms have cell nuclei enclosed in membranes.

In physics, a domain well is an abstract concept that can have two distinct meanings in either magnetism or string theory.

In information technology, the term domain is used to describe a wide range of instances. The Domain Name System, for example, is a naming system for computers and services connected to the Internet and organized hierarchically.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), based in the United States, oversees the world-wide Internet systems of unique identifiers, and ensures that all operations are running smoothly. Among other things, the ICANN also coordinates the top-level development and architecture of Internet domain name space. The ICANN authorizes commercial entities to manage the reservation of Internet domain names, according to a set of strict guidelines. Individuals and businesses are thus able to register domain names via accredited domain name registrars.

A Windows domain is a collection of security principals that share a central database known as Active Directory for Windows 2000 and Active Directory Domain Services for Windows Server 2008.

In computer networking, the term broadcast domain is used to delimit a specific division of a computer network in which all nodes reach each other by broadcast at the data link layer. In electronics, the phrase clock domain crossing refers to the crossing of a signal from one clock domain to another.


Domains are used in mathematical analysis to refer to connected open subsets of a finite-dimensional vector space, but may also be used when talking about the domain of a function, which is the set of argument values for which a function is defined.

In the United States, an eminent domain (or compulsory purchase) refers to the action of the state to seize an individual's private property with due monetary compensation, but without the owner's consent. Property taken by eminent domain is usually used for public utility, railroads or highways.
