donation

A donation is the act of providing something of value, be it money or a service or an idea, to a charitable cause.

The things that individuals and organizations donate are as vast as the reasons that they donate.

For example, one may donate blood to the Red Cross, for reasons personal to that individual. In the U.S., blood donors are sometimes given money in exchange for their blood.

Donations of money, or assets retaining a specific value may be given away so as to provide a tax break come tax season. In general, the donator may not have to pay taxes on the amount equal to the monetary value of the donation.

A car donation is a popular item that allows for a tax write off. The person or business that donates the car, if able to provide proof of its value, can write off that amount at tax time.
