download

A download is a file or set of files transferred from one computer or device to another, typically via the Internet and from a remote source such as a Web server, FTP server, or mail server. Downloads may be hosted for direct acquisition from a site, or found as e-mail attachments.

Downloadable programs can be virtually anything, from a screensaver application to a game demo to system utilities and beyond. Photographs and media (audio and video) files retrieved from a remote source are often shared (at times illegally) directly between users via a specific type of downloading and uploading known as peer-to-peer file sharing, accomplished with protocols such as BitTorrent.

As more and more content is transmitted and received over the Internet, programs have emerged to manage multiple concurrent exchanges called download managers, offering such functionality as resuming interrupted downloads and accessing and retrieving a file from multiple points within it, speeding up the overall acquisition process.
