Dr. Seuss is the pen name of beloved children's book author Theodor Seuss Geisel. The son of prosperous German immigrants, Theodor Geisel attended Dartmouth College, where he served as editor of the college humor magazine. It was at Dartmouth that Geisel first used the "Seuss" pseudonym. Following graduate studies at Oxford, Geisel pursued a career as a cartoonist and illustrator. The first book that he authored, And To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected 27 times.

Geisel's first success as an author came with the publication of The Cat in the Hat, a book designed to appeal to new readers with rhymes and a simple 223-word vocabulary. By the time of his death at age 87, Geisel had written and illustrated over 40 books for children, including such classics as Green Eggs and Ham, The Lorax, and Oh The Places You'll Go. His Christmas story, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, was made into an popular animated television program in the 1960's and a live-action feature film starring Jim Carrey in 2000. A television series called "The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot about That" based on Geisel's famous feline character appears on PBS. Many of Geisel's books contain political messages, including statements against racism (The Sneetches), environmental degradation (The Lorax) and the American-Soviet arms race (The Butter Battle Book.)

Schools and libraries often plan special events celebrating Dr. Seuss's legacy during Geisel's birth month, March.

Many blogs celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday with crafts, such as these Lorax-themed trees on Frugal Family Fun Blog, and food, including green egg and ham crepes on Food for My Family.
