drink
Drink is another word for a liquid beverage. Drinks may be alcoholic (as in the case of beer and wine) or non-alchoholic (as in the case of water, juice, and soda). They may be served hot (i.e. coffee, tea, yerbe mate, and chai) or cold (i.e. colas, cider, or iced tea). Juices are made by macerating fresh fruit or vegetables. Some popular juices are orange juice, tomato juice, pomegranate juice, apple juice, and grapefruit juice. In some cases, various food ingredients (i.e. fruits, ice cream, sugar) may be combined with a liquid (milk, rice milk, soymilk, alcohol) to make a shake.
Historically, the drinking of various beverages has been politically significant. European coffee houses, which were established in the 1600's, were often linked to political discourse and action. During the Boston Tea Party, tea from the British East India Company was dumped into Boston Harbor as an act of protest, one of the key events that led to the American Revolution. Later, the popularity of the U.S. Temperance Movement led to the banning of alcohol under Prohibition as well as a variety of odd (but not always enforced) drinking laws (including several that banned ice cream sodas).
