Prior to the 60's, plaster was the most common building material.

A plaster application in a house could take as long as a week to complete where as the same job could be finished in two days with drywall.

Drywall, as opposed to other wall structure materials, can be put up by both professionals and DIYers, which helps keep drywall installation cost down.

A DIYer can get by with a few common tools. Basic utility knife, drywall T-square, drywall saw, drywall screws, drill, tape, mud and a few pieces of sandpaper is basically all that is needed to complete any job.
