dunks

Some people watch baseball for the home runs. Or NASCAR for the crashes. In the case of basketball, its most prized highlight is the slam dunk, or dunk for short.

Videos of the best, dare we say "sickest," dunks are everywhere, and one amateur slam dunk artist was nominated for a YouTube award in 2007.

But that's in a gym. In actual games, dunks are exciting and can result in "posterization," or belittlement of the defender. Great dunks always mention the dunker and the dunked on, and typically "better," "nastier" dunks are done by shorter players against taller competitors. Hence John Starks' dunk over his taller foes Michael Jordan AND Horace Grant in 1993 being called "The Dunk."

The annual NBA Slam-Dunk Competition always creates a flurry of videos, especially when a creative dunk, such as Dwight Howard's "sticker dunk" in 2007, occurs.

And once in a while, dunks are mesmerizing when they end in writhing pain in the backyard on a trampoline.
