A group of medical conditions that result in the inflammation or irritation of the skin is known as eczema. Atopic eczema is the most common form of eczema and people with atopic eczema may be prone to other allergic conditions as well.

According to WebMD between 9-30% of the population is likely to experience eczema, especially in infants and young children. Eczema may be resolved as children age. Eczema is characterized by changes in the quality of skin which may include thick, red or patchy splotches on the skin and is always accompanied by itching. In young children this may include oozing of a discharge.
