educate

To educate means, in a broad sense, to pass down cultural traits from one generation to another. The term, however, is usually used in reference to formal schooling and supervised practice, especially in a skill, trade or profession.

The European Convention on Human Rights has recognized the right to education since 1952, while the United Nations have been guaranteeing this right since 1966. Nearly all human societies provide some systems of schooling, from the least developed to the most developed countries. Systems of higher education typically consist of colleges and universities, with the recent years having seen the spread of various programs for education online.

The main purposes of schooling everywhere can include development of abstract reasoning, appropriation of the methods for scientific inquiry, the cultivation of the intellect, the development of spirituality and the modeling of a free society.
