An electronic cigarette is an electrical device created to simulate the act of smoking a classical tobacco cigarette.

Electronic cigarettes work by producing a vapor that mimics the texture and flavor of tobacco smoke, however without exhibiting the odor and much of the chemical contents of tobacco smoke. They are believed to be a safer alternative to cigarette smoking, and they are used primarily by individuals who wish to quit smoking, although critics argue that electronic cigarettes may still carry some health risks and that they may appeal to otherwise non-smoking individuals, under the premise that they do not threaten health.

Electronic cigarettes use either heat or ultrasonics to vaporize a propylene glycol or glycerin based solution into a suspension that can be inhaled, much like household humidifiers vaporize liquid to increase air humidity.

Electronic cigarettes may sometimes contain nicotine, in an attempt to suppress the smoker's desire to consume classical cigarettes. The devices may resemble cigarettes even further, by imitating the design and size of a regular cigarette, even though, for practical reasons, numerous models are shaped to look like screwdrivers or pens, and can display a wide range of encrusted patterns.

The first electronic cigarette was invented in 2003 by Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist who released the product on the market the following year, to an unexpected commercial success. For the time being, there is no consensus in the medical community regarding the safety and adverse effects of electronic cigarettes, and due to their relative novelty, their use is not yet regulated in most parts of the world. The company Hon Lik worked for quickly saw the market potential of the new product, changed their name to Ruyan (which means "to resemble smoking" in Chinese) and began exporting the device in 2005.

Electronic cigarette reviews discuss three major components, namely the cartridge, the atomizer and the power source. Cartridges are small, disposable plastic holders which contain an absorbent material that is infused with the solution to be vaporized. The atomizer generates the heat that is needed to vaporize the solution, and functions much like an incandescent light bulb, via a filament that deteriorates over time and will eventually need to be replaced. The power source of an electronic cigarette is usually a traditional lithium-ion rechargeable battery.
