The dynamic portrayal of human sexuality can be categorized as erotica. Derived from the mythical god Eros ("god of love"), the hallmarks of erotica include content that contains sexually arousing situations or descriptions.

Erotica is frequently portrayed in film, painting, sculpture and literature.  It has caused controversy among conservative cultures, often along with violent entertainment, and how often one is more acceptable than the other.

The distinction between erotica and pornography narrows as time passes. Contemporary filmmakers that aim to raise the bar are challenging the view of pornography as a crude (unerotic) format.
