ESPN, which stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, had its humble beginnings in 1979 when father and son team, Bill and Scott Rasmussen, launched the fledgling network's flagship show, SportsCenter.

Originally meant to be a cable television outlet for showing off college sports in the state of Connecticut, ESPN grew by leaps and bounds, showing sports 24 hours a day. In the early days, people were likely to find Australian Rules Football, table tennis, and gymnastics in prime time. Now, Major League Baseball and the National Football League are mainstays on the network which reaches nearly 100 million homes in the United States. In addition to the main cable channel, ESPN also broadcasts sporting events through ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Radio, and ESPN360.com. In 2008, ESPN entered into a partnership with Major League Gaming, looking to get into the online gaming market.

ESPN's main headquarters are located in Bristol, Connecticut.
