A face lift, or a rhytidectomy in medical lingo (which literally means "surgical removal of wrinkles"), is a cosmetic surgical procedure by which the facial skin is separated from deeper tissues, stretched and ultimately tightened to provide a more youthful appearance, while the excess skin is removed. This type of procedure may or may not involve removal of fat tissue from under the skin (particularly from under the eyes and from the neck).

In the United States, facelifts were the sixth most demanded cosmetic surgery in 2008, right after liposuction, breast augmentation, blepharoplasty, abdominoplasty, breast reduction, and rhinoplasty.

Face lifts have a long history, with the first such operation having been performed over 100 years ago in Berlin, by surgeon Eugene Hollander, who augmented the appearance of a Polish aristocrat.

In most face lift procedures, a clean incision is made in front of the ear, then curving around it and finally extending toward the hairline on the back of the neck. The skin can then be loosened with a scalpel, providing the surgeon with the opportunity to tighten the superficial muscular system of the face by using sutures, as well as remove some of the deeper tissues, although this is not always necessary. The skin is ultimately redraped, the excess skin is removed and the incisions are sutured.

As a beautifying procedure, face lifts are used to eliminate skin folds around the neck and correct the droopiness of tissues in the cheeks. In addition to face lifts, Botox injections may be used to straighten fine wrinkles in the forehead and reduce the visibility of the nasolabial folds.

Since the incision in face lifts is usually behind the ear, it is nearly unnoticeable with well performed operations. Men can risk having their sideburns angled in an unnatural fashion, however, if the intervention is not carefully carried out.

Although complications of face lift procedures are usually minor, subcutaneous bleeding can occur, which means that the patient will have to return to the operating table for corrective measures. More alarming after effects, such as damage to the facial nerves, infection or necrosis of skin tissues, can also develop, however, in some isolated cases.
