As expected the Farmers’ Markets last week were meat and plant heavy and vegetable light. At the Maplewood Farmers’ Market (thankfully under the patio tent because of the rain) it was the relatively slim pickings you would expect on opening day.

Farmer John grows approximately 35 acres of pumpkins. He grows them in all different shapes and sizes, some are white, some buckskin but most of them are orange. Pumpkins are planted late May to early June depending on the weather. The growing time for pumpkins is 120 days.

Ovis Hill Farm/Naturally Outdoors Farmers Market Saturday we finished the first round of shearing (the woolliest of the woolies) and of course had a cold rain that night. Jonathan left enough wool so that the freshly shorn did OK, even though they no doubt were a little chilly.

Taters to go Last night I got a my potatoes in (late yes - but man it just rains when I want to do things) - and when putting them in - it started raining. I suppose that's good - with all the rice shortages and the fact I'm starting to get used to working in watery conditions - maybe I should plant rice :) Anyhow - I am 100% Yukon Gold this year- because they taste so good.

Have you received your $600 from Uncle Sam yet? I haven’t, but expect it to show up any day now. Marketers in my area are expecting that check too, as evidenced by a recent surge of advertising, encouraging consumers to spend – even cash – their tax rebate checks at one store or another.
