FDA stands for Food and Drug Administration which is a United States government run agency that oversees the food and pharmaceutical industries. The FDA enforces regulations and standards that companies must remain compliant with to ensure high safety standards across the board. The FDA oversees not only the production of foods and prescription medications but also vaccines, medical, and cosmetic products.
The weight loss industry is always under close scrutiny from the FDA. Dietary supplements also fall under the jurisdiction of the FDA, but in 1994 it was mandated that they were regulated as foods and not falling under the same rigorous safety and testing that pharmaceutical companies fall under. The FDA can only take action on supplements after they have been shown to be unsafe leading to several fat burning pills and products designed to help people lose weight fast coming off the market only after they have ended up injuring people.
The regulatory powers of the FDA will continue to expand as markets in the drug and medical industry continue to grow at a rapid pace. You can learn more about recent dealings and legal matters that the FDA has been involved in at the FDA Law Blog.
