Installing Fedora Directory Server

Installing an Ubuntu server was probably not the best option then... No matter. It is certainly possible to install FDS on Ubuntu: the full instructions are here. Mercifully, however, someone who should be given a medal has created the install packages.

The password for the configuration directory server admin is required. This is usually the password for the user you use to login to the console.

A nice LDAP server system with a nice interface. Not really useful in the beginnings, probably due to the lack of my own knowledge but it supports nice fail over and replication methods.

Have a read: OpenLDAP is unmatched by any other directory service, proprietary or open source. Of all the others available, the proprietary ones are just hiding their dirty laundry and all of them are just a waste of time and money.
