Fiber optic, or optical fiber, is the technology and medium by which the transmission of information as light impulses is sent along a glass or plastic wire.

Fiber optic wire carries a lot more information than the common copper wire. Fiber optic wire is far less susceptible to electromagnetic interference, is much thinner and lighter than metal wires, and data can be transmitted digitally (as opposed to analogically) over fiber optic wire.

Fiber optic is technology now commonly used in long distance telephone, television and high speed internet services.
