The oxidation of combustible materials results in fire. Depending on the substances in the fire, the color of the flame and the intensity may vary. A fire needs oxygen, heat and fuel to exist. Once ignited a chain reaction occurs for the fire to sustain its own heat, which relies on oxygen and fuel to exist. Fire fighting services are provided in most areas to extinguish or contain fires. A wide variety of fire fighting equipment and apparatus are used for the fighting of fires. Building codes require passive fire protection and active fire protection know as fire sprinklers to minimize the potential damage from fires. Fire insurance is included in most standard homeowner policies.
