Fire sprinklers are protection systems designed to help protect humans from the ravages of fire. Fire sprinklers can be automatic or open orifice. At a predetermined temperature a fusible element melts or a glass bulb containing liquids breaks allowing the plug of the orifice to be pushed out and allowing the water to flow. The majority of fire sprinklers work independently and are made to flow downward; although spray heads can be added to change the flow and direction of the water spray.
The ESFR is an Early Suppression Fast Response Sprinkler system which was developed in the 1990s to combine technology and high challenge fire hazards. They are designed to fully suppress the fire as opposed to containing the fire as the fire sprinklers before this had done.
